Joel is owner of
Professionally Speaking and is author of The Wedding MC Handbook
and Little Helpings of Food for Thought. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Memorial University of
Newfoundland.He has been a member of Toastmasters International since 1989. Toastmasters International is the world's largest non-profit, educational organization dedicated to developing public and inter-personal communication skills. He has earned several designations, including their highest designation; DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster) which he achieved in 1994. Joel is a charter member and Past President of NLAPS (Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Professional Speakers). NLAPS was established in Jan 2007. He is also a member of CAPS (Canadian Association of Professional Speakers). Joel has a diverse employment history. He was employed with Bell Aliant, for over 22 years, as a Sr. IT Specialist and Manager. Prior to joining Bell Aliant (formerly NewTel) in 1988 he was employed by two international computer companies, Unisys and Digital Equipment Corporation where he had a successful seven year career in customer support and sales. He also worked with the federal Department of Transportation for eight years as an Air Traffic Controller in Gander. Joel has provided his services to a wide variety of groups and organizations, throughout the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He has presented to conferences and conventions at the local, provincial and national levels. He was an instructor with Memorial University Division of Continuing Studies for 10 years where he taught a variety of career enrichment courses. He is currently an instructor with the College of the North Atlantic Division of Continuing Studies. Giving back is an important aspect of Joel's life. He has taken an active leadership role in a variety of community
organizations; Kinsmen, Junior Achievement, Parent Teachers Association,
Toastmasters International, Rotary International and the St. John's Board of Trade. His
involvement with these organizations has given him a great deal of
experience working with and motivating individuals and groups towards
specific goals. In addition to this he has been a member of Pure Jam
for 10 years. Pure Jam is a
not-for-profit duet that performs for local senior groups, retirement homes and
charities. They perform 35-40 times per year.
